Don't feel smart...!

Before write my reflection, I want to apologize to Miss Vita, I felt if made a mistake about my awareness to study well.

Talking about presentation yesterday was taut, I thought. Because there were a happening that made class atmosphere was uncomfortable. At the beginning in the first presentation that was Achi’s presentation was fluent and comfortable. She presented about definition paragraph. All of my friends agreed if her paragraph was definition paragraph. When Aris presented his paragraph, the class atmosphere was changing. He presented about argumentative paragraph, I was sad with Aris’s condition. When Miss Vita asked about the difference topic and topic sentence and where topic and topic sentence is, he could not answer it. Miss Vita explained that topic is a phrase or word and topic sentence is a sentence. Miss Vita felt disappointed, she could not restrain anger, because Aris should come to consult for discussing about his problems, but he did not come. I thought, it was a lesson if we do not” Felt smart” about something. We must study, study and study. Do not give up Aris, Proof you can do it well and make Miss Vita believe if you can change…! Fighting. Rois’s presentation about cause and effect paragraph, his paragraph was clear, I thought. Ima’s paragraph was exposition paragraph. There were debating in this paragraph, I thought Ima’s paragraph was reporting was not exposition, because the topic was not related with the supporting sentences. Aida’s paragraph, she explained about cause-effect paragraph and all of classmates agreed if her paragraph was cause-effect paragraph. The last was Faidah’s paragraph, she explained about illustration paragraph. At the beginning, some friends argued that it was not illustration paragraph. They argued it was narrative paragraph. After discussing and Miss Vita explained clearly, finally all of classmates agreed if this was illustration paragraph. Thanks so much Miss Vita for knowledge that given for us. We do hope you, do not feel tired teach and support us.
I got brightness in this situation……

Don’t feel smart!

Let's read...!

Last week was my time to present the presentation. I presented about contrast paragraph, I was happy when explained this paragraph, because all of my friends and my lecturer agreed that my paragraph was really contrast paragraph. I just explained a little part of this paragraph. There were my friends asked me about the differences between comparison paragraph and contrast paragraph. I explained that “comparison paragraph explains the similarity from something that compared and contrast paragraph explains the differences from something that compared”
Not only me presented last week, but also my friends, they are, Fia, Mega, Dini and Nisa. I got some understanding from their presentation, such as
From Fia’s paragraph. At the beginning, she argued that her paragraph was argumentative paragraph. But it was explanation paragraph exactly. If it was argumentative paragraph,  it should have the author opinion in it. it learning on other opinion. Dini’s paragraph was process analysis, at the beginning I confused, because the topic was classification paragraph, but the supporting sentences were process analysis. Mega’s paragraph was definition paragraph, it was clear paragraph. Aini’s paragraph was cause-effect paragraph, it was clear paragraph and the last Nisa’s paragraph,  she explained about comparison and contrast paragraph.I thougt, it was good paragraph.

Funny Presentation

Discussion about types of paragraph always interesting. Exactly when, I discussed with Aris about Narrative paragraph. Beginning I confused with written by Aris, because I thought his paragraph was not Narrative paragraph but resemble with Descriptive paragraph and I commented much commentary on his paper. He wrote about vocation on interesting place namely Bali island when he was in Senior high school, he was leaner told and described about Bali island not his experience. So it made me confused whatever this paragraph is Narrative or Descriptive. I did not find the answer, so I asked to Miss Vita, from her explanation, I had known that in Narrative we can describe something but do not too detail. From this explanation I knew that Aris’s paragraph were true Narrative paragraph not Descriptive paragraph. Sorry Aris, hehe.
And I did not forget... Presentation last week was enjoyable and so fun. Exactly, Yogi’s presentation about Descriptive paragraph. All of classmates confused by his paragraph, because on his paragraph unrelated between main idea and supporting sentences. There were some friends said that was Explanation paragraph and Definition paragraph. And then Lilis asked to him, what he modified his paragraph and he answered “yes”….. He resumed his paragraph. All of classmates laughed and Miss Vita too. Spirit Yogi, You can do it!
I think, we must be careful and accurate to make or find out a paragraph

Come on, read this writing!

Material of writing last week was interesting because classmates were very enthusiastic, when discussing about types of paragraph. Actually, before this class I had known and understand about types of paragraph in Senior high school, but it did not detail than in writing class. In  writing class, I had gotten everything about types of paragraph, such as: narration, description, definition, comparison and persuasion.

Narration is Paragraphs written as a narration are a chronological presentation of events that add up to a story. Paragraphs of this type contain characters, setting, conflict and resolution.
Description is Descriptive type of paragraphs are written in such a way that the reader is able to imagine the scene, object, person, etc. Series of detailed observations are recorded, using sensory language. Descriptions are like narrative paragraphs, with visual characteristics unfolding in a dramative way. The main objective of a description is to move the story ahead.
Definition is Definition type of paragraphs, provide the meaning, using events and happenings. A strong effort should be made to clearly explain what something is, and not what it is not.
Comparison is The objective of paragraphs written in comparison style is to compare, two or more objects, characters, events etc. A chart can be prepared before writing a comparison paragraph. This chart could include the names of the items compared, and the criteria by which they are compared.
Persuasion is The objective of a persuasive paragraph is to persuade people to change their minds, or take action. Persuasive paragraphs help people formulate an opinion and deepen it, by adding conviction.

But, sometimes I confused when finding some types of paragraphs, because there are some paragraphs which is the first sentence shows the characteristic of definition paragraph but, the next sentences are different.

Is there any suggestion, objection or question. Comment please, thanks in advance.

Love Story

 Silent Story

Once, there was a couple who love very much each other. From the very Begin, the girl's family objected strongly on her dating this guy. Saying that it has got to do with family background & that the girl will have to suffer for the rest of her life if she were to be with him. Due to family's pressure, the couple quarrel very often. Though the girl love the guy deeply, but she always ask him: "How deep is your love for me?"

As the guy is not good with his words, this often cause the girl to be very upset. With that & the family's pressure, the girl often vent her anger on him. As for him, he only endure it in silence.

After a couple of years, the guy finally graduated & decided to further his studies in overseas. Before leaving, he proposed to the girl: "I'm not very good with words. But all I know is that I love you. If you allow me, I will take care of you for the rest of my life. As for your family, I'll try my best to talk them round. Will you marry me?" The girl agreed, & with the guy's determination, the family finally gave in & agreed to let them get married. So before he leave, they got engaged.

The girl went out to the working society, whereas the guy was overseas, continuing his studies. They sent their love through emails & phone calls. Though it's hard, but both never thought of giving up.

One day, while the girl was on her way to work, she was knocked down by a car that lost control. When she woke up, she saw her parents beside her bed. She realised that she was badly injured. Seeing her mum crying, she wanted to comfort her. But she realized that all that could come out of her mouth was just a sigh. She has lost her voice......

The doctors says that the impact on her brain has caused her to lose her voice. Listening to her parents' comfort, but with nothing coming out from her, she broke down. During the stay in hospital, besides silence cry,.....it's still just silence cry that companied her. Upon reaching home, everything seems to be the same. Except for the ringing tone of the phone. Which pierced into her heart everytime it rang. She does not wish to let the guy know. & not wanting to be a burden to him, she wrote a letter to him saying that she does not wish to wait any longer.

With that, she sent the ring back to him. In return, the guy sent millions & millions of reply, and countless of phonecalls,.. all the girl could do, besides crying, is still crying....

The parents decided to move away, hoping that she could eventually forget everything & be happy. With a new environment, the girl learn sign language & started a new life. Telling herself everyday that she must forget the guy. One day, her friend came & told her that he's back. She asked her friend not to let him know what happened to her. Since then, there wasn't anymore news of him.

A year has passed & her friend came with an envelope, containing an invitation card for the guy's wedding. The girl was shattered. When she open the letter, she saw her name in it instead. When she was about to ask her friend what's going on, she saw the guy standing in front of her. He used sign language telling her "I've spent a year's time to learn sign language. Just to let you know that I've not forgotten our promise. Let me have the chance to be your voice. I Love You. With that, he slipped the ring back into her finger. The girl finally smiled.

My Understanding

So far, I think my understanding about a paragraph similar to the explanation on the text and I hope this explanation can useful for you all. Amin

A paragraph is a group of sentences that convey and idea and all the sentences that deal with one set of ideas.
"The paragraph deals with one subject according to a definite plan with sentences that follow one another clearly and smoothly".

A paragraph consists of:
  • a)      The topic sentence, the main idea of the paragraph is expressed in the topic sentence. Place the topic sentence at or near the beginning of the paragraph.
  • b)      The supporting sentences help to develop the main idea. These sentences give specific details related to the topic sentence.
  • c)      A concluding sentence often restates the main idea of the topic sentence.

A good paragraph has:
• a topic sentence stating the main point of the paragraph,
• supporting sentences with details and specific examples as proof of your point,
• logical, coherent thoughts that are developed in order from one sentence to the next, and
• a concluding idea that wraps up the point of the paragraph.

 A good topic sentence:
• informs the reader of the subject that will be discussed in the paragraph,
• asserts the writer’s point of view or attitude,
• intrigues the reader to continue reading,
• creates a sense of action, and
• is not vague, rambling, too narrow or too broad.

There are seven Types of Paragraph Development

1.      Narration Paragraph

A narration paragraph tells a story of one specific event. The primary focus of the topic sentence is to identify the event or thought, including your stance on it. A narration paragraph explains the significance of the event, purpose for writing the narrative and includes enough detail to engage the reader.

2.       Definition Paragraph

A definition paragraph explains how something function or what its purpose is. The topic sentence identifies the subject or concept to define. A definition paragraph works in both fiction and academic pieces. When writing a definition paragraph, use specific examples and be thorough.

3.      Comparison

A comparison  paragraph compares two events, people or situations. Explain why the two terms are relevant and use specific examples to portray the similarities and differences. At the end of the paragraph, identify what the comparison or contrast revealed.

4.      Classification Paragraph

A classification paragraph divides items into various groups or categories. The paragraph needs to explain each item and identify how it fits into the classification. Use the appropriate categories to group each item.

5.      Explanation Paragraph

An explanation paragraph clarifies a topic and uses relevant information to support your explanation. The topic sentence should give an idea and identify your view of the topic. Use multiple examples to support your case, without ignoring the opposing point of view. You need to explain why your examples are more significant than the opposition.

6.      Description Paragraph

A description paragraph focuses on actions and uses verbs, as opposed to adjectives or adverbs. In order to describe the event, person, process or position effectively, remains objective in your description. Use specific details in your description.

7.      Exposition

An exposition paragraph is similar to an explanatory paragraph. In an exposition paragraph, your primary focus is to be credible. Ask yourself why is the key concept is worth mentioning and cite specific examples, preferably from reputable sources with authority. Exposition paragraphs appear at the beginning of an article or essay, since they explain the overall importance of the idea.
